Fences, Dog Kennels, Puppy Houses and Other Projects: Contracting Blogs

Hello! My name is C.J., and as you may have guessed from the title of my blog, I am a huge dog lover. My dog has specialised things in my home like a built-in shelf for his food and water bowls and a dedicated grooming area with a bath. Outside, he has his own shady area, a dog house with a heated floor and a sturdy fence. I worked with contractors through all of those projects, and I hope to do even more. This blog is going to talk about contracting... I hope to start with some posts about the process involved in some of the things the contractor made for my pup but I also plan to include some posts with a more general contracting focus. Take a look and enjoy!

Renovation Choices to Make Your Kitchen Appear Larger

Irene Little

You may be planning a kitchen renovation while keeping the current layout, even though you would prefer that the kitchen were larger. However, working within the current footprint, you can create the illusion of more space by making the right design choices. Here are several ideas.

Taller Cupboards

If you're not expanding the breadth and width of the cabinetry, you may be able to go taller with the upper cupboards, extending them to the ceiling. Their tallness will give the impression of a high ceiling and a roomier kitchen. Additionally, the cupboards will appear more seamless without a gap at the top: the clean contours will increase the impression of space.

To get the best effect, keep these things in mind. Don't choose a dark colour as the cupboards may then appear overwhelming. Additionally, you could install doors with glass panels that offer a view inside the cupboard rather than closing it off from sight. This will subtly give the illusion that the wall is farther away.

Skylight

Another upgrade that may be possible within the current kitchen layout is a skylight. The opening will break up the solid ceiling, and the kitchen will feel lighter and airier as a result. A skylight will also naturally let more daylight flow in, which will also help. The extra illumination will eliminate dim spots that can seem to visually shrink a room. Alternatively, you may be able to expand the vertical windows or install a glass-panelled door that looks onto the garden.

Flat Cupboard Doors

Another tip for cabinets that will open up the kitchen is to choose a simple, uncluttered door style. Ornate carvings and handles attract the eye and can give a stop-and-start visual effect, and the room can feel busy and crowded. Instead, opt for flat doors with soft-touch technology that lets you eliminate the handles. Or choose a minimal handle design that doesn't grab attention.

Glossy Surfaces

Preserving the light flow is a great way to make custom kitchens appear larger. This can be accomplished by incorporating reflective materials that bounce and reflect light to the next surface. A subtle and pleasing way to achieve this is with a glossy white tiled splashback and a polished benchtop in stone or laminate. Stainless steel is another material you can put to good use on sinks and appliances. You can place metal on the splashback in the form of tiles, which will sparkle with reflected light.
